Why the Hike

A Life Changing Luncheon.

Dan Ogburn became acquainted with Seigle Avenue Preschool Cooperative about four years ago. It started with a very timely call from a friend inviting Dan to a not so quiet lunch. 40 preschool children would be in attendance. This lunch grew into a volunteer role and a spot on the Seigle Avenue Preschool Board of Directors.

At the time, Dan owned an envelope company that demanded most of his energy. While the job was financially rewarding, Dan started to feel that he wanted more out of life than the day-to-day grind.

Dan had always believed that anyone can live an extraordinary life. Now at 42 years of age, Dan had an epiphany. “You just have to believe in yourself, ignoring any internal voice that tells you that you aren’t capable of achieving something special,” says Dan. “I decided I needed to do more than just talk the talk.” He needed to walk the walk. In 2004, Dan sold his company. The really hard work was just beginning.

Dan’s 2,170-Mile Journey.

March 31, 2005, Dan plans to begin an adventure that many start, but only 20% actually complete; he’s going to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. His journey will start at Springer Mountain, in Georgia and won’t end until he reaches Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Dan will traverse 2,170 miles. And all for a very special cause: the kids of Seigle Avenue Preschool Cooperative. Dan hopes to raise $23 a mile – a goal of $50,000. All proceeds will go to the school.

Inspiration Meets Motivation.

This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity for the Preschool Cooperative. However, Dan will be the first to tell you that this journey is not exclusively selfless. “The only way I can really focus and succeed is to know that I’m doing this mostly for me,” shares Dan. “I can’t go into it thinking that I’ve got 40 kids in my backpack. I have to focus inward.” Dan sees himself as the true beneficiary.

Teaching By Example.

Dan’s epic hike is an inspiration to many – especially to the children at the Preschool Cooperative. They will have the chance to be a special part of Dan’s journey from their classroom. Dan will send regular updates and photos. Of course, you can follow him, too. Messages and pictures will be posted on www.dansAThike.com. We hope you’ll follow him, support him and maybe even learn from him.

We all have the potential to contribute something extraordinary. Whether it’s physical or financial. You decide how you can help best.
